La première épreuve de la Coupe du Monde FIM des Bajas s’est terminée par un renversement de situation en tête de la course. Mare (Honda), vainqueur de la veille, a dû abandonner à cause d’un problème mécanique tandis que Mark Ackerman (Husqvarna) écope d’une pénalité pour waypoint manqué et laisse la victoire à Sam Smith (KTM).
Vendredi, Aaron Mare (Honda) remportait la première Spéciale et filait vers une nouvelle victoire de la Dubai International Baja mais les djinns du désert en décidèrent autrement et il cassa son moteur dans la SS2.
La victoire sourit alors à un autre Sud Africain, Mark Ackerman (Husqvarna), qui passe la ligne d’arrivée en première position… mais lui non plus n’aura pas accès à la plus haute marche du podium, pénalisé de 20’, il régresse à la 5e place. La baja se court avec un GPS avec flèche ouverte, il n’y a donc pas de navigation, mais il faut valider tous les waypoints. Ackerman en a raté un… en passant à 1 mètre seulement du rayon de validation et, erreur, n’a pas fait demi-tour quand il s’en est aperçu mais a forcé le système pour avoir le point suivant. Il lui restera la victoire de la catégorie Vétéran.
C’est donc Sam Smith (KTM), troisième de la SS1, qui remporte la première Baja FIM de la saison avec 1’31 d’avance sur le Tchèque Martin Michek (Husqvarna ) qui signe l’exploit du jour après une lourde chute hier. L’Émirati Mohammed Al Balooshi (Husqvarna) complète le podium malgré une chute tout comme son frère Sultan qui a été transporté en hélicoptère et souffre de différentes fractures.
Pour sa première participation à la Dubai International Baja, le jeune Polonais, Konrad Dabrowski (KTM), prouve, une fois de plus, qu’il a la tête sur les épaules, termine 6e et remporte la catégorie Junior marquant ses premiers points à la Coupe du Monde FIM des Bajas 2021. La Néerlandaise, Mirjam Pol (Husqvarna) termine 10e et gagne la catégorie féminine devant Margot Llobera Farre (KTM) et Aishwarya Pissay (Husqvarna).
En quad, victoire du Saoudien Altuwayjiri (Yamaha) devant son compatriote Al Nomsi (Yamaha).

The first round of the FIM Bajas World Cup saw a turnaround in the results at the head of the race on the second day. South African Aaron Mare (Honda), the winner of the opening leg, had to retire because of a mechanical issue, while Mark Ackerman (Husqvarna) was penalised for missing a waypoint and this duly handed victory to Sam Smith (KTM). Mare won the opening stage on Friday and looked to be heading to another victory at the Dubai International Baja, but his desert jinx decided otherwise and he broke his engine in SS2. Ackerman, also from South Africa, then crossed the finish line in first position, only to see the top step of the podium slip away when he was penalised 20 minutes and he slipped to fifth place.
The Baja was run with a GPS system with an open arrow so there was no navigation, but each of the waypoints needed to be validated. Ackerman missed one – he came within only three feet of the valid trigger zone – and, mistakenly, did not turn around when he saw it and the system duly switched to the next point. He was forced to settle for victory in the Veteran category. So Smith – third in SS1 – won the first FIM Baja of the season with a 1min 31sec cushion over the Czech rider Martin Michek (Husqvarna) who managed to complete the event after a heavy crash on day one.
Emirati rider Mohammed Al-Balooshi (Husqvarna) rounded off the podium places, despite a crash of his own. His brother Sultan was not so fortunate and was transported to hospital by helicopter after sustaining several fractures after a fall.
Polish rider Konrad Dabrowski (KTM) took part in the Dubai International Baja for the first time and proved, once again, that he has a wise head on young shoulders by finishing sixth and first in the Junior category. He scored vital points in the 2021 FIM Bajas World Cup. Mirjam Pol (Husqvarna) finished 10th and won the Women’s category, the Dutch rider finishing ahead of Margot Llobera Farre (KTM) and Aishwarya Pissay (Husqvarna).
In the quads, victory fell to the Saudi rider Haitham Al-Tuwayjri (Yamaha) who finished ahead of his compatriot Hani Al-Namesi (Yamaha).
